Percussion Kentucky half-stock rifle signed in script, by the possible maker, appears to be "R E". Rifle was made, circa 1850, and resembles guns made in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania area with the stock having a silver cheek inlay similar to what is known as the "Brookville Eye". Rifle measures 48" overall with a 33" rifled 36 caliber octagon barrel with silver blade front sight, rear Buckhorn sight, maker's initials, and crudely scratched owner name that appears to be "R. Backes". Commercial made back-action percussion lock with German silver lock plate and double set trigger control. Curly maple half-stock with engraved German silver hardware, pewter nose cap, and nine silver engraved inlays. Comes with hardwood ramrod. CALIBER: 36. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Overall fair with metal having a plum patina and areas of pitting. Barrel has several replaced dovetails from sight relocation. Wood has been lightly cleaned. There is also some missing wood along forestock and several cracks around lock. Pitted bore with mechanics needing attention.
