.54 caliber, 6" barrel, NSN.  Bright finish with walnut stock secured by brass barrel band.  Boxlock-type action with lockplate marked " N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS" and "USR/1843". Barrel correctly marked "JCB/P", indicating inspection by Joseph C Bragg. Hammer and bolster show matching "R" sub-inspector stamps.  Counterpane correctly marked with script "WAT" and "JCB" marks of and Joseph C. Bragg, respectively. Only 144 pistols were produced by Ames for the "Revenue-Marine" or "Revenue Cutter Service", which would evolve into the modern Coast Guard. **Very good condition overall. Barrel has some salt and pepper patination with some accompanying old pitting and dents. Some moderate pitting on lockplate which somewhat obscures markings. Stock shows some handling marks and blemishes due to age, but with legible cartouches. Action is functional. A good example for the advanced collector.** $1,000-$3,000
